Disney Wonder Cast Member Charged with Embezzlement

Last week, federal agents arrested a Disney Cruise Line cast member for embezzling more than $275,000 from the Walt Disney Company.

Renan Dias da Rocha Gomes, who for the last two years has worked in a retail store aboard the Disney Wonder, was taken into custody on Friday when the ship returned to San Diego from a cruise to Mexico.

Gomes allegedly used his access to the VeriFone system to fraudulently obtain the money, which he then loaded onto Disney gift cards. At least $35,000 of the money was used this spring to take his family on a Walt Disney World vacation.

According to prosecutors, Gomes has confessed to the crime. He is currently still in federal custody pending a hearing on Wednesday.
