Meet Tucker, the newest baby animal at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!
Just this morning, we watched some of Tucker’s first moments out on Kilimanjaro Safaris‘ African savanna alongside his mama, Mara.
This long-awaited arrival marks the first giraffe calf birth at the Walt Disney World Resort since 2021, underscoring Disney’s ongoing commitment to wildlife and species protection.
The birth of Mara’s baby giraffe at Animal Kingdom is a significant achievement, as the Masai giraffe is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with only around 30,000 giraffes remaining around the world. With habitat loss and poaching threats in their natural environments, Disney is working hard to help protect this iconic species.
“Tucker’s birth is really important for us. It’s a testament to Disney’s leadership in animal care and conservation and our incredible partnership with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the Species Survival Plan. This plan focuses on maintaining genetic diversity of the giraffe population and helping to prevent giraffes from becoming extinct.” – Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment.
Disney’s team of world-class animal care professionals and expert onsite veterinarians have been working around the clock to ensure both Mara and baby Tucker receive the ultimate care. This birth is a true testament to the incredible work of the animal care team at Walt Disney World.
Recognizing the urgency to protect rapidly vanishing wildlife and habitats around the world, the Disney Conservation Fund supports renowned conservation organizations leading vital efforts in this area. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF). Since its founding in 1995, DCF has invested over $132 million in community-based conservation programs, empowering organizations to safeguard wildlife, inspire action, and strengthen environmental resilience.
Tucker’s arrival plays a crucial role in enhancing the genetic diversity and health of the Masai giraffe population, helping to preserve these magnificent creatures for future generations to observe and appreciate.
Watching a tower of giraffe grace the savanna, with their long strides and necks stretching to the sky, is simply awe-inspiring; and seeing the new young calf familiarize himself in his new environment is truly special. Next time you hop aboard Kilimanjaro Safaris, keep an eye out for baby Tucker out on the savanna!
