Why EPCOT and Skyliner Resort Hotels Aren’t Ideal for Rope Drop Families

Unless you are a massive fan of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, I would argue that the EPCOT resort hotels and the Skyliner resort hotels are not the best choice for families who love to rope drop. This is especially true when you are paying a premium to stay at a Deluxe resort like Beach Club, Yacht Club, BoardWalk Inn, or Riviera Resort. On paper, these hotels feel like a dream for EPCOT lovers. In practice, they can be surprisingly frustrating if your goal is to maximize early morning park time.

The biggest issue comes down to where you enter the park. Guests at these resorts almost always enter EPCOT through the International Gateway. While that entrance is incredibly convenient for World Showcase dining, nighttime strolls, and festivals, it is on the opposite end of the park from many of EPCOT’s biggest headline attractions. Cosmic Rewind, Frozen Ever After, and Test Track are all clustered closer to the northeast corner of the park. Being locked into the back southwestern entrance immediately puts rope drop-focused families at a disadvantage.

This might sound dramatic at first, but the timing difference is very real. Guests entering through the front of the park effectively get a ten to fifteen-minute head start. The walk from the International Gateway all the way to the front of EPCOT is no joke, especially first thing in the morning when everyone is moving with purpose. For a casual visitor, that might not feel like a big deal. But for anyone who takes Early Entry seriously, those minutes matter a lot.

When Early Entry is only thirty minutes long, spending fifteen of those minutes just walking across the park cuts your advantage in half. Meanwhile, guests who enter through the front gates can move directly toward Cosmic Rewind or Test Track the moment they are allowed in. On a good morning, those guests might be off Cosmic Rewind quickly enough to still line up for Test Track before Early Entry ends. That is simply not realistic for guests coming from the International Gateway, no matter how fast they walk.

This is why it feels particularly frustrating when you consider the cost of these resorts. If I were a DVC owner at one of the EPCOT area hotels, I would be a very vocal advocate for adding morning bus service to the front of EPCOT, at least during Early Entry and regular park opening. Giving guests the option to choose which entrance best fits their touring style would go a long way in making these resorts feel like the premium experience they are priced as.

To be clear, this does not mean these hotels are bad. If you love strolling into EPCOT in the evening, grabbing dinner, or doing a casual snack around the world after a long park day, the EPCOT resort hotels are fantastic. They shine in the late afternoon and nighttime hours. But for families who want to squeeze every possible minute out of early morning park time, these resorts can actually work against you at the very park they are supposed to benefit the most.

It is all about knowing your priorities. If rope drop is sacred in your family, the EPCOT and Skyliner resorts may not be the slam dunk they initially appear to be.
