New Details for Animation-Inspired Experience Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Walt Disney World will introduce a new family experience in 2026 when the former Star Wars: Launch Bay space at Disney’s Hollywood Studios transforms into The Magic of Disney Animation. The experience takes inspiration from the Emmy Award-winning short Once Upon a Studio, bringing Disney Animation characters and artistry into a hands-on environment built for all ages.

The building will be redesigned to resemble the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, complete with Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat on the roof. Inside, the story begins as if the animators have stepped away and the characters have taken over. Guests explore playful versions of departments found inside Disney Animation’s real studio. Portraits come to life, short films play with a twist, and guests can learn to draw their own character sketches.

Young children will have their own dedicated play area called Drawn to Wonderland. This indoor space features oversized flowers that double as musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset, and a Tulgey Wood zone. The design draws on original concept art for Alice in Wonderland by Disney Legend Mary Blair.

Character greetings will be a large part of the experience, with many opportunities spread throughout the building. Disney says the goal is to create a space where families can play and explore together through the lens of animation.

The changes extend outdoors. The entire courtyard will be reimagined as The Walt Disney Studios, inspired by buildings from the Burbank lot. The Studio Theater will continue to house The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure, and a new Disney Jr. show – Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! – will debut in a nearby soundstage. Families will have shaded spots to rest and snack, and Disney hints that characters may appear in unexpected places around the courtyard.

Another feature, Off the Page!, will give guests a chance to meet characters inside themed spaces that represent six animation departments. In the Story area, Mulan greets guests beside an oversized storyboard. In the Background & Layout area, Rapunzel appears in a scene built to mimic the classic multiplane camera effect. Other departments, including Computer Animation, Hand-Drawn Animation, and Lighting Effects, will have their own character moments and photo locations.

Disney Animation artists and Walt Disney Imagineers are developing the project together. As part of the transition, Animation Courtyard and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! are now closed. The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure and Walt Disney Presents will continue to remain open.

The Magic of Disney Animation opens in 2026. Guests can watch Once Upon a Studio now on Disney+.
