Disney’s Animal Kingdom has welcomed a new resident to Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. A 21-year-old western lowland gorilla named Bakari has officially joined the park’s gorilla family and will serve as the troop’s new silverback, or leader. Bakari recently arrived from the Saint Louis Zoo, where he previously lived before making the move to Walt Disney World.
Disney shared the news on social media, writing:
“A new chapter begins on Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail!
Meet Bakari, our new male western lowland gorilla who has joined our family troop. Bakari will begin his new role as the head of the family, also called the silverback. You might spot him on your next adventure, so be on the lookout! Welcome home, Bakari. We’re so happy you’re here.
Bakari’s arrival also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Gorilla Falls family troop following the loss of Gino, Animal Kingdom’s longtime silverback. Gino passed away last year at the age of 44 after serving as the troop’s leader for nearly three decades. He had been part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom since the park opened on April 22, 1998, and fathered 14 offspring during his lifetime, leaving behind a lasting legacy in both conservation and the lives of countless guests who visited Gorilla Falls over the years.
According to officials, Bakari’s move gives him the opportunity to lead his own family group through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program designed to help maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations of animals in accredited zoos.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered, making programs like the AZA Species Survival Plan an important part of long-term conservation efforts.
As he settles into his new home, Disney is allowing him time to acclimate to his surroundings before fully introducing him to guests. During this adjustment period, portions of the viewing areas along Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail are currently blocked off while animal care teams monitor his transition and help him become comfortable in his new environment.
Once Bakari has fully adjusted, guests can expect to see him leading the family troop throughout the habitat.
