A Look Back at Disney Parks x McDonalds
McDonald’s and Disney have a long, on-again, off-again history, especially when it comes to Happy Meal toys tied to Disney Parks. The partnership began in the late 1980s and became a major marketing engine through the ’90s and early 2000s. Kids were getting everything from Walt Disney World attraction figures, or plastic characters dressed in World Showcase-themed costumes, to movie tie-ins that doubled as park advertising.

There was even a dragon (representing Beastly Kingdom which never came to be) included in the set released in 1998 for the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

In 1996, the two companies signed a 10-year global partnership that put Disney characters in Happy Meals and even brought McDonald’s food into the parks… remember the fry cart in Frontierland and when Restaurantosaurus was Dinoland U.S.A.’s own McDonald’s?
But the relationship cooled in the mid-2000s as Disney decided on promoting healthier options and stepped away from so much fast food. McDonald’s eventually closed its in-park locations, ending an era a lot of us still remember. The collaboration has resurfaced in recent years, mainly tied to movie releases with some Disney Parks-themed Happy Meal toys debuting for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary, the Disney 100 celebration, and now Disneyland 70!

Nostalgia sells, and these toys are still a major part of Disney fans’ childhood memories, carrying down through new generations visiting the parks today. Something tells me that little Gold Sleeping Beauty Castle shown above will be the difficult one to find…
