The National Elephant Center, which was founded in 2013 with the help of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and several zoos across the country, is no longer operating in Fellsmere, Florida. The Center had housed five elephants since it opened; three of those died. However, Fellsmere City Manager Jason Nunemaker hasn’t heard a word from the Center, and said, “I guess I would be somewhat optimistic that maybe this will allow something else to occur. I think with the infrastructure that’s out there, it’s well suited to do its original mission under some other form, some other entity.”
The Center’s lead elephant care specialist had previously worked for Disney; he left his job at the Center and returned to work at Disney late last year.
The Center was originally intended to “provide short-term and long-term care for male elephants, who can become aggressive and unpredictable when their testosterone levels are elevated, and for herds.”
