When most people picture Walt Disney World, the first things that come to mind are the rides… a Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind launch into the cosmos, or the familiar sights and smells of the Pirates of the Caribbean waters… and fair enough. But the parks hold a lot more than their attraction lineup, and some of the best experiences at Walt Disney World don’t involve a queue or Lightning Lane at all. Whether you’re a returning visitor ready for something different, or a first-timer hitting a wall with the crowds, here are some unexpected things to do that have nothing to do with rides.
Take a Behind-the-Scenes Tour
Disney offers a variety of guided tours that pull back the curtain on how the magic actually works. “Keys to the Kingdom” is a longtime favorite. This is where a small group walks through Magic Kingdom with an official tour guide covering park history, a few classic attractions, a prepared lunch, and a trip through the famous underground Utilidor tunnels that most guests never see.

Over at EPCOT, you can dive into the “Behind the Seeds” greenhouse tour in The Land Pavilion, where you’ll learn about sustainable farming and Disney’s innovative horticulture techniques. It’s the only backstage tour that takes place inside an attraction. Several tours depart daily, you can inquire in advance, or day-of at the Behind the Seeds Tour desk inside the Land pavilion.

Go Resort-Hopping!
Despite the recent updates to Disney Springs’ transportation policies, even if you’re not staying at a Disney resort, you can still visit them! Resort-hopping is a favorite pastime for many Disney veterans. Take a resort bus from the parks, or hop on the monorail and explore the beautiful lobbies of the Grand Floridian, grab a DOLE Whip or tiki drink from the Polynesian Village Resort, or stare up at the historic Mary Blair mural of the Grand Canyon Concourse at the Contemporary.

Each resort has its own personality, dining options, and “hidden” surprises; like the Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto tiki bar or the nightly Electrical Water Pageant on Seven Seas Lagoon.

Enjoy a Fireworks Cruise or Movie Under the Stars
Evening magic doesn’t require a park ticket. For a quieter take on the nighttime spectaculars, book a fireworks cruise from one of the resort marinas. These are private or group boats that put you out on the water with a clear view and none of the crowd.

Or, if you’re staying at a Disney resort, check the schedule for Movies Under the Stars: complimentary nightly screenings of Disney films on outdoor lawns.

Get Creative or Get Moving
Looking for something creative or hands-on? Many Disney resorts offer activities like tie-dye shirt making, painting classes, or scavenger hunts. Each of the resorts have expansive pathways or dedicated walking/running trails around the grounds, and most offer scenic views of waterways and woods.

Surrey bikes that seat two, four, or six people are available for rent to scoot around Disney’s Boardwalk Inn, Saratoga Springs Resort, Old Key West, and both Port Orleans resorts.

If you’re feeling more outdoorsy, head to Fort Wilderness for horseback riding, archery, or canoeing. You can even go fishing in one of Disney’s stocked lakes – gear and guides included!

— Knock ‘fishing at Walt Disney World’ off your bucket list!
As you can see, there’s so much more to do than rides and shows at Walt Disney World. These lesser-known offerings can turn your vacation into something even more memorable, whether you’re in search of relaxation, adventure, or something unexpected. What are you waiting for? It’s time to start planning!
