An agreement has finally been made between the
Disneyland Resort and their 2,100 hotel workers. The hotel workers' union, Unite Here Local 11, has been fighting the resort for four years over their contract and has now settled upon a new five-year agreement, valid through January 2017. The union has been upset over increases in the healthcare costs and claimed that the employees were not able to afford these increases. According to the
Los Angeles Times, employees involved in the union include "housekeepers, food and beverage workers, front-desk staff and other hourly workers at the
Disneyland Hotel, the
Grand Californian Hotel and the
Paradise Pier Hotel." The group has
protested at Disney several times.
Under the new contract, employees will have a wage increase and housekeepers will have their daily workload reduced. Employees will have more choices in their healthcare plan, choosing to remain in the current union plan and contributing $7-$10 per week, or switching to one of Disney's plans and receiving a one-time bonus. Workers will also have more job security and protection for their seniority levels.
Tony Bruno, vice president of Disneyland Resort Hotels and Downtown Disney released a statement, saying, "We're extremely pleased that the Disneyland Resort hotel cast members represented by Unite Here Local 11 have overwhelmingly supported this fair and comprehensive agreement."
