Kenny Baker, the actor who played R2-D2 in the Star Wars films, passed away August 13, 2016, at the age of 81.
The actor from Birmingham, England was 3 feet 8 inches tall and was hired by George Lucas to bring the droid to life. مواقع قمار StarWars.com says that the actor was responsible for creating the robot’s “much-loved innocent yet adventurous personality from inside the droid. Baker also portrayed Paploo, the Ewok in Return of the Jedi who steals a speeder bike.
Baker also starred in The Elephant Man (1980), Time Bandits (1981), Willow (1988), and more. He was honored for his work in 1978 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre with the opportunity to make Artoo’s footprints in the cement.
Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, said, “We’re all saddened to learn of Kenny’s passing. There is no Star Wars without R2-D2, and Kenny defined who R2-D2 was and is. He will be greatly missed.”
George Lucas said, “Kenny Baker was a real gentleman as well as an incredible trooper who always worked hard under difficult circumstances. A talented vaudevillian who could always make everybody laugh, Kenny was truly the heart and soul of R2-D2 and will be missed by all his fans and everyone who knew him.”
