The Walt Disney World resort draws millions of guests each year, making its parks and resorts feel crowded and overwhelming, especially during those peak times.
If you are making your first visit to Walt Disney World during the holiday season or during the heat of the summer, you could be in for a few rough surprises. While the crowds are often more pronounced during the holidays, the summer brings a different beast: heat and crowds.
On a summer day, the weather in Orlando, Florida, could reach unbearable temperatures, matched with being elbow-to-elbow with fellow park guests. Avoiding these crowds is paramount not only for making your vacation more enjoyable but also for giving yourself a much-needed break throughout the day.
The Magic Kingdom is the world’s most visited theme park and can feel very overwhelming for first-time guests, especially during peak days. But despite its hefty attendance, the park offers several indoor shows and attractions with minimal waits to provide guests a break from the noise.
EPCOT has seen its attendance grow steadily and even saw the largest attendance increase among Disney theme parks in 2024, according to the TEA Global Experience Index. Fortunately, this park has very wide walkways and many hidden nooks to find some peace and moments away from the crowds.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom, WDW’s least-attended theme park, can still get overwhelming on peak days, but, like EPCOT, it features many wide walkways and hidden areas that make avoiding the crowds much more manageable, even for newer visitors.
That leaves us with the topic of this piece, Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Hollywood Studios is the smallest of the four theme parks at Walt Disney World and often feels the most overwhelming because of its design. In its current form, the park is covered in concrete, with few water features or hidden corners, making avoiding the hustle even more challenging.
In the parks’ current attraction lineup, there is a massive emphasis on e-ticket attractions, which can significantly inflate wait times. With several highly popular attractions in the park, they can get extremely busy within a few hours of opening, placing a significant burden on park operations.
Additionally, unlike the other parks, there are not many slow-moving dark rides that can handle a high hourly capacity. With each e-ticket having a limited hourly capacity, these rides can see wait times skyrocket during the park’s first hour of operation, leaving many guests frustrated.
Pairing this with narrow walkways, a small footprint, and several dead ends can make your trip to Hollywood Studios go from fun to miserable in a matter of hours.
Even though these factors can be difficult to navigate, there are many underrated and frankly, unknown ways to evade the heat and more importantly, the crowds at the smallest park in Walt Disney World.
Morning Gameplan
Your Disney day is just about to begin. You boarded the first resort bus, the Skyliner, and/or boat, and are waiting at the entrance gates nearly an hour before park opening. You are standing near the front of the line and ready to make a beeline straight to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance as soon as the rope drops.
Unfortunately, before you know it, you are standing behind a large crowd on Hollywood Boulevard, and you quickly go from first line to nearly 200th.
When avoiding crowds, and especially during peak times, rope-dropping is essential, as even though the parks will be crowded, there will be fewer guests in the morning. However, what many Disney guests do not know is that, even when rope-dropping, those highly coveted attractions can still get very crowded.
At Hollywood Studios, the previously mentioned Rise of the Resistance and Toy Story Land’s Slinky Dog Dash are the heavy culprits of this.

Guests looking to start their morning in a calm manner should instead pivot to Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway or make a right turn down Sunset Boulevard and knock out The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster (which closed on March 2 to make way for the Muppets). These attractions are still popular e-tickets, but do not draw the same crowds during the first hour of park opening.
Per Thrill Data, the Tower of Terror typically sees the “posted” wait time exceed 40 minutes after the park has been open for almost 90 minutes. This is quite drastic when compared to Slinky Dog Dash, which typically has a wait of over an hour, just 60 minutes after park opening.
If attractions like Slinky Dog Dash or Rise of the Resistance are on your “must-do” list, knocking them out in the morning is still a fine game plan. Just prepare for the vast majority of guests to have the same idea.
An alternative would be to wait until the end of your day to ride Slinky Dog Dash/Rise of the Resistance when the wait times are much lower, or look to use a Lightning Multi-Pass/Single-Pass if that is your vacation budget.
Starting your day by pivoting to several other popular attractions that are less crowded will set you off on the right foot and make it much more enjoyable.
This is also a sneaky strategy when visiting the Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While the morning rush of guests “zig” to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Avatar Flight of Passage, instead “zag” to Peter Pan’s Flight and Na’vi River Journey. You will have the opportunity to ride more attractions and enjoy a nice breakfast, rather than spending your entire opening hour on one major e-ticket.
Navigating the Mid-Day Madness
You began your day on the Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and even managed to sneak on Runaway Railway before the 10 AM crowd began to flood into the park. Now comes the challenging part of this exercise, navigating the peak afternoon crowds and heat in the smallest theme park in WDW.
While Animal Kingdom offers many animal exhibits and walkthroughs, and EPCOT features the illustrious World Showcase, which is filled with hidden crannies, Hollywood Studios is much tougher to find a quiet moment.
This exercise is actually even tougher in early 2026 due to some recent closures. On June 7, 2025, Muppet*Vision 3D shut its doors along with the “Muppet Courtyard” section of Grand Avenue. The surrounding courtyard, which was located in the former Streets of America, featured countless corners and intricate details to spot.
Following the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, this courtyard was often overlooked by most park guests, making it the perfect hideout.
Additionally, on September 24, 2025, Animation Courtyard shut down (temporarily) for a makeover, which will welcome a new area themed to the Walt Disney Studios Lot that is located in Burbank, California. This new area will take great inspiration from the space’s original theme, The Magic of Disney Animation, and showcase the intricacies of the animation process. This new area is set to open late summer of 2026.
The former courtyard was home to Star Wars Launch Bay, which offered great air conditioning and a quiet spot away from the crowds, and even featured several unique character greeting experiences.
Even with these two locations off the map, there are still many ways to avoid the crowds and heat at Hollywood Studios.
The popular answer would be to enjoy the park’s live entertainment offerings. Even though this park is the smallest (in comparison to the other three Walt Disney World parks), Hollywood Studios boasts five live theater productions that run all day long.
The most popular of the bunch is the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, which has been around since Disney’s MGM Studios opened its doors in 1989. This show features three elaborate reenactments from Raiders of the Lost Ark and even takes you behind the scenes of the magic of filmmaking.
Down Sunset Boulevard, guests can see Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage. This show premiered on the same day the soon-to-be Oscar-winning film opened in theaters, on November 22, 1991. While this show has been performing for over 30 years, it is still an excellent way to escape the crowds and take a break.

Those two productions take place in a large outdoor theater, while the other three live performances are completely indoors, offering an even better escape from the heat.
Walking down Echo Lake, guests can stroll into the Hyperion Theater and see A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration. While this is primarily a “clip” show featuring the iconic soundtrack of the 2013 hit film, it also includes several segments featuring live actors.
Throughout the performance, two royal historians of Arendelle serve as narrators, performing various comedy routines and providing commentary on each scene.
The other two indoor live productions are relatively new to the park. On May 27, 2025, Disney Villains Unfairly Ever After and The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure both debuted at Hollywood Studios. In Unfairly Ever After (as the title suggests), a production hosted by the Magic Mirror features several iconic villain making their case to the audience that they are treated “unfairly” in various musical performances. At the end of the show, guests have the ability to cast their vote, awarding one villain, the most unfair of them all.
In A Musical Adventure, guests are treated to a “book report” re-telling of the classic film, The Little Mermaid. A version of this show, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, occupied this same space for much of the park’s history, but closed before the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the parks reopened, this building remained shut and appeared to be on the chopping block.
However, years later, Disney revisited this space and created an entirely new production. This show features additional musical numbers not in the previous edition, such as Kiss the Girl, and a wide variety of puppets alongside live actors, making it one of the best live productions at a Disney park.
Out of all the live entertainment style offerings at Hollywood Studios, this is a can’t-miss.
As noted previously, alter this summer when Animation Courtyard reopens, a new production, Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! will offer yet another indoor live show.
Let’s not forget one of the most hidden gems at Walt Disney World: Walt Disney Presents.
Originally known as One Man’s Dream, this space features a museum and a theater that provide a perfect blend of quiet, exhibits, and seating areas. Through the museum portion of this exhibit, guests can see many artifacts from Walt Disney’s life and his eventual journey to creating Disneyland.
At the museum, guests can spot models of recognizable attractions, such as the Tower of Terror and the Tree of Life. A recent addition to the museum’s portfolio was an exhibit from Walt Disney Imagineering featuring concepts and models of the many projects under development at Walt Disney World.
At the center of this exhibit is a full-scale model of the Tropical Americas area, which is coming to Animal Kingdom along with concepts of various other projects in development. These models contain so much detail and offer visitors an excellent opportunity to see what to look forward to on their next trip.
Overall, this museum features many historical artifacts and plaques that let guests slow down during their busy day and escape the crowds, and offers educational value to even the most knowledgeable Disney fans.
Additionally, guests can visit the Mickey Shorts Theatre to see Vacation Fun and enjoy several indoor character meet-and-greet experiences, including The Edna Mode Experience and Mickey & Minnie – Red Carpet Dreams.
Hidden Corners in the Park
While those shows offer a great escape from the crowds during the mid-way madness of Hollywood Studios, where else can guests go to avoid the mob?
While this park does not have as many “hideouts” as the other three, there are still several places to get a bite to eat without feeling crowded.
The quick-service restaurant Backlot Express is not known for its illustrious menu; this location offers a large seating area, which is perfect for avoiding crowds. Typically, guests can find the back corners of the restaurant empty, offering a quiet area to enjoy a snack. An interesting “hack” to consider on your next visit is to bring food from a nearby venue, like Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction or Baseline Taphouse, and find a hidden corner to enjoy your meal.
Near the previously mentioned Edna Mode character experience, guests can also find a quiet corner in the former “Pixar Place” section. While this corner of the park is a dead end, this section is often overlooked and even features spontaneous meet-and-greets with other Pixar characters.
Additionally, while Galaxy’s Edge is one of the most popular areas of the entire resort, given the land’s design, there are many corners within the outpost that are far from the major attractions and eateries, offering quiet places.

Final Thoughts
Finding a quiet corner and a break from the heat at Hollywood Studios is not easy. It is by far the most difficult to do in comparison to the other three parks.
However, by spending your morning on a road less traveled, enjoying live entertainment, and exploring the often-overlooked corners of the park, guests can find many alternatives and escape the hustle and bustle of the smallest theme park in Walt Disney World.

When on a Disney vacation (especially at Hollywood Studios), the best advice is to take it slow and enjoy the atmosphere. The park can get quite overwhelming, and taking the extra minutes to relax can make the world of a difference.
