Rock music too loud for whales at SeaWorld?

Rocker Tommy Lee sent a letter to SeaWorld officials telling them that the loud music played in their "Shamu Rocks" show is hurting the whales. Lee, drummer for the band Motley Crue, has been a longtime advocate for animals and has worked with the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in the past. Lee's letter asked the parks to not use his band's music in the show and said, "Although we like to torture the human fans who willingly come to our shows, we don't want to be a part of making innocent animals' lives hellish...Whales are not head-bangers, so stop cranking the music and take one small step toward improving their welfare."

SeaWorld has responded this week, saying Lee has the facts wrong about the show and the effects the music has on the animals. No Motley Crue songs have been used in the show, and they say the volume of the music is not a threat to the animals.

Lee now claims that "his information is backed up by science from the United Nations Wildlife Panel and a Natural Resources Defense Council study on how loud noises are tortuous to marine animals, especially captive ones." He plans to make sure that other bands are aware their music may be used in the show, so they will be able to complain as well.

The Shamu Rocks show currently takes place at SeaWorld San Diego and seasonally at SeaWorld in Orlando and San Antonio.
