How To Spend the Perfect Non-Park Day at Disney World

A trip to Walt Disney World can be exhausting at any point of the year. Even if you are going for just three days, a long day at a theme park can quickly make this vacation feel not very “restful.” That is why it is so important to pace yourself while on this vacation, not only to enjoy the small moments but also so you do not come home thinking you need a vacation from your vacation.

While it may seem difficult to plan a non-park day into your Walt Disney World visit, especially if you have not visited the World for a long time or have a limited trip, finding a day to unwind will set you up for an even more productive and, more importantly, enjoyable remainder of your trip.

No matter if your non-park day is on your arrival date, departure date, or even in the middle of your seven-day vacation, finding one day to enjoy your resort and explore the amenities of Walt Disney World outside of the four major theme parks will provide you with even more appreciation of the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

In this piece, we will attempt to construct the perfect non-park day at Walt Disney World. While some may consider Disney Springs the perfect alternative “rest day,” for the sake of this piece, we will not include that as a potential alternative.

Instead, we will look simply at resort activities, amenities, and other activities within the grounds of Walt Disney World. Without further ado, let’s begin planning the perfect non-park day.

Character Breakfast

Even though we will not set foot into one of the four Walt Disney World theme parks on this day, it does not mean you cannot enjoy quality time with your favorite characters. Several resorts in the Disney Resorts Collection offer breakfast with characters that give you the opportunity to not only enjoy a nice meal but also get a nice “Disney fix,” especially while on vacation.

As of writing, six resorts offer a character-inspired breakfast: 1900 Park Fare (at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa), Cape May Cafe (at Disney’s Beach Club Resort), Chef Mickey’s (at Disney’s Contemporary Resort) ‘Ohana (at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort), Topolino’s Terrace (at Disney’s Riviera Resort), and Ravello (at Four Seasons Orlando Resort). While most of these experiences feature members from the Fab Five or the Sensational Six, a handful of themes offer a more unique selection of characters.

At 1900 Park Fare, guests can meet Mirabel (from Encanto), Cinderella (from Cinderella), Aladdin (from Aladdin), and Princess Tiana (from The Princess and the Frog). At ‘Ohana, guests can meet Lilo and Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch). In fact, this is the only specific location where guests can meet Lilo on property outside of special surprise visits within the parks.

While Mickey and his pals are at nearly all of these locations, they wear specific themed attire to match the restaurant’s setting, which adds a great twist and uniqueness to your photos. At Chef Mickey’s, they are dressed in traditional chef attire, while at Cape May Cafe, they wear beach attire.

While these dining experiences are expensive on the surface, especially when comparing it to tradtional quick-service locations at the resorts, when not purchasing theme park admission for the day, this will not only provide you with a little Disney kick but allow you to interact with the characters and experience the magic, without needing to step foot into the park, which is the main objective of a rest day.

Resort Amenities and Experiences

After starting your day with a nice character breakfast at your home resort or at a nearby location, let’s dive into the main activities to enjoy during the day.

Wonders of the Lodge Tour

One of my personal favorite hidden gems takes place in the morning at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort. Typically, guests can take part in the Wonders of the Lodge tour every day at 9 AM. This tour begins in the lobby and is led by a trained cast member. During the tour, the cast member will take you around the highly detailed lobby and resort grounds, explaining the backstory and design choices behind the resort.

On the tour, you will be taken into the Carolwood Pacific Room at the Boulder Ridge Villas, a highlight for anyone deeply interested in Disney history. In this room, guests can see actual railroad cars from Walt Disney’s personal, to-scale railroad that existed in his home in California. This train would later become one of the first inspirations for him, leading to the creation of Disneyland Park. When I stayed at the Boulder Ridge Villas in August 2025, I found myself spending much of my mornings exploring the history and intricacies of this lobby.

While many guests believe most of the historical aspects of Walt Disney World are found at the Contemporary, Polynesian, or Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, given that they are the original “three” resorts, the Carlwood Pacific Room is filled with Disney history worth taking the time to visit.

Even if you opt not to participate in the tour, exploring the Wilderness Lodge is a great way to spend a relaxing morning. I highlighted many of the intricacies that guests will learn about in the tour in a previous article I published for The DIS (which can be found here!). The best part of this experience (especially compared to the others we will highlight) is that it is completely free to all guests, even if you are not staying at the Wilderness Lodge.

Sangria University

Did you know there was a Sangria tasting class held on Disney property? At Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort on Saturdays and Sundays, guests can take part in the Sangria University experience, which allows them to explore and taste the history and several types of sangria. Led by professionals, guests will meet at the Toledo – Tapas, Steak, & Seafood restaurant at Gran Destino Tower for a 90-minute interactive experience.

During the seating, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the history of sangria and discuss several recipes, including those used to make the in-house drinks offered at Toledo’s dinner service. Additionally, at the conclusion of the experience, guests will have the option to taste four sangrias, enjoy a light appetizer, and even make their own glass of sangria using a wide selection of fresh fruits and base spirits.

While this is an adult-centered experience, it’s a perfect way to spend your afternoon on a non-park day if you’re looking for a more mature setting while still enjoying Disney-level service.

The Garden View Lounge – Tea Experience

The other exclusive midday dining experience we will highlight is the recently reopened Garden View Lounge – Tea Experience at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. This experience actually shut its doors ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic and did not reopen until early 2026.

When this lounge reopened on March 19, 2026, nearly six years after its prior closure, the entire menu was reworked into an Alice in Wonderland experience. Located at the back of the resort lobby, overlooking the grounds, guests can enjoy an afternoon tea experience featuring Twinings tea and several sweet and savory bites.

During the experience, guests are served several pastries and small bites themed to the Walt Disney classic, including a Tweedledee Egg Salad Sandwich, Flamingo Croquet Choux, Curried Chicken Salad Playing Card Tart, and more that perfectly fit the theme.

However, like Sangria University, this experience does come with a high price tag, but for those looking to enjoy the elegance of the golden afternoon rather than a park day, it is well worth the splurge. Both of these dining experiences are worth making early reservations for, and if they are on your must-do list, you should book them as early as possible (60 days prior for resort guests).

Fantasia Gardens and Fairways Miniature Golf

Our next non-park day experience might be one of the most hidden gems in all of Walt Disney World. This experience opened on May 20, 1996, and was often overshadowed by the large expansions underway on the property at the time, including the numerous resorts and the looming construction of the fourth theme park, Disney Animal Kingdom, which opened just two years later.

Located alongside the Crescent Lake resorts (Disney’s Boardwalk Inn Resort, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club) and the third-party-owned Swan, Dolphin, and Swan Reserve resorts are two 18-hole miniature golf courses themed after the Walt Disney film Fantasia.

The gardens hold two courses: the Fantasia Gardens, the more traditional setting for miniature golf, and the Fantasia Fariways, the far more difficult course designed for more experienced golfers.

Along the main course (Fantasia Gardens), guests will take part in highly detailed putting rounds that are inspired by the classic film. Along the 18-hole course, guests will play to the film’s legendary score, conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Each hole features characters from the film that will not only challenge players’ golf skills, but also offer the Disney magic they can experience at the parks.

However, unlike the two dining experiences we noted, this activity is far more affordable and a great midday experience for the family. Currently, adult tickets cost around $19 USD, while children’s tickets cost $12 USD. Those with annual passes can save up to 15%, and several specific vacation packages offer free tickets.

FootGolf Course

The final experience we will discuss is typically available in the late afternoons/evenings. At the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course, guests can take part in a fun twist on the sport, in FootGolf. This activity combines soccer and golf into one sport.

Guests will kick a soccer ball along the fairway and try to get it into the hole, similar to golf. The only difference is that, instead of using a putter, you will be using your legs. As with the Tea Experience and Fantasia Gardens, advanced reservations are highly recommended.

All of these activities are easily accessible via Disney transportation. Guests can arrive at the Wilderness Lodge, Grand Floridian, or one of the Disney-owned Crescent Lake resorts (Boardwalk, Yacht, and Beach Club) via a Disney bus. To arrive at the FootGolf course, guests must let their front desk attendant at their home resort know, and they will personally schedule a complimentary taxi to take them to the course for their tee time.

Splurging on Dinner/Evening Experiences

Character Dinner

Those who enjoyed a nice, quiet morning at their resort, or even caught up on some much-needed sleep, can still enjoy character experiences for dinner. Like the ones we noted above when discussing breakfast, several offer character dining for dinner, in addition to some unique ones that are open only in the evening.

Currently, the Disney Resorts Collection offers three character dinner experiences, including the aforementioned 1900 Park Fare and Chef Mickey’s. However, the one exclusive dinner experience takes place at the Wilderness Lodge, at Storybook Dining at Artist’s Point. Unlike the other two dining experiences, this is not a buffet (but it still offers a prix-fixe menu). In this experience, guests will have the opportunity to meet Snow White, Grumpy, Dopey, and even the Queen (if you dare).

During my most recent stay at The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa earlier in May, I dined at 1900 Park Fare and enjoyed a fantastic dinner. I would highly recommend it to all guests, especially those looking for a nightly character experience.

As in the morning, character dining is an excellent way to get a taste of Disney magic without setting foot in the busy theme parks. Those looking to catch up on some sleep should consider booking one of these three character experiences in the evening.

Fireworks Cruise

Lastly, if you opt for a true “resort-only” day and want to save on your budget, why not splurge on a fireworks cruise to cap off your evening? Currently, Walt Disney World offers two firework cruises, one for Happily Ever After at the Magic Kingdom and Luminous: The Symphony of Us at EPCOT. Depending on which cruise you take, guests will depart from the Contemporary or Yacht & Beach Club and enjoy the nighttime spectaculars from a completely different point of view.

Prices start at $499, but each boat can sit up to 10 guests. While it may seem high at first glance, with a full party of 10, the experience could be worth the splurge, as it would be far less than buying individual park tickets for your party on that specific day.

Exploring Your Resort

To round this out with a “bonus” activity, sometimes the best way to enjoy a relaxing day on property is to explore your resort. No matter which Disney resort you are calling home on your vacation, it offers far more than just a bed to sleep in.

As noted earlier, when I stayed at the Boulder Ridge Villas last summer, I not only came across the tour but also truly enjoyed exploring the hidden corners and admiring the immense attention to detail throughout the resort.

Take the time to appreciate the small moments of your Disney trip, as those are often the highlights you remember most.
