If you plan on visiting a Walt Disney World Theme park on New Year's Eve, you should arrive early in the morning and be prepared to spend the entire day. The parks will reach capacity with no further admittance allowed. Park Hopping on New Years Eve is not recommended.
It's a common misconception that onsite guests are guaranteed admittance. While you can expect to get into a park, it may not be the park where you planned on celebrating the New Year. Note that having a Dining Reservation does not mean that you will be allowed in should that park reach capacity.
For your comfort, arrive early and rent a locker. Should the weather be an issue, you can stow your warm clothes or raingear.
Fastpasses will be snapped up quickly. Get yours as soon as possible. It's not uncommon to see waits of 2+ hours at the most popular attractions.
The parks will have live entertainment throughout the day/evening in addition to special midnight fireworks.

New Years Eve will be celebrated at Atlantic Dance (Disney's Boardwalk Resort) from 8pm until 2am on New Years Eve. The cost is $25 per person - all guests must be 21 and up. Price includes a champagne toast at midnight, as well as party favors.
Tickets will go on sale starting Friday, Dec 26, 2008 at the ESPN Club from 11:30am to 12:00 midnight, and at Atlantic Dance on Dec 30th from 12pm thru the start of the event.

Downtown Disney will have some special events on New Years Eve from 6:30pm until Midnight, including a DJ Kids Dance Party at the Waterside Stage, a live DJ playing at Pleasure Island (what's left of it), entertainment in front of Fultons Crab House and Adventurers Club (that's IN FRONT OF Adventurers Club , not inside), as well as entertainment in front of Virgin Megastore.
Shopping hours at Downtown Disney Marketplace are extended until midnight. DisneyQuest is open until 10:00pm, and Cirque du Soleil will have a 6pm and 9pm show on Dec 31, 2008.
There will be NO FIREWORKS at Downtown Disney on New Years Eve this year.
