How to Avoid Crowds and Heat at EPCOT

With the Florida summer looming in the distance, it is time to continue our series on how to navigate each of the four Walt Disney World theme parks during the rough and often difficult-to-manage Florida sun.

We have already looked at the top tips and tricks to avoid the heat and crowds at Disney Hollywood Studios (click here!) and the Magic Kingdom (click here!). This week, we will jump on the monorail from Magic Kingdom, take a stop at the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC), and head over to the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, aka EPCOT.

EPCOT was the second theme park in the Walt Disney World Resort and opened its doors in 1982. While the park has undergone many changes throughout history, its core themes remain in place today.

At its heart, EPCOT is a theme park designed to educate you in an entertaining way, a concept known as edutainment. During the opening years, guests could take part in many edutainment experiences in the front half of the park, known as Future World, such as Spaceship Earth, Universe of Energy, Listen to the Land, and The Living Seas, some of which still exist in some form today.

In the back of the park, guests can experience a 365-day World’s Fair. While Walt Disney’s original idea for this park was to be a functioning city, due to operational and risk concerns, the Imagineers pivoted to a World’s Fair-esque concept that allows guests to take a trip around the world in one day.

Over time, the park has evolved and begun incorporating IPs into each section. However, in 2019, EPCOT underwent its biggest reimagining yet, transforming the entire Future World section into three discussion neighborhoods and introducing many new attractions. Guests can now visit World Celebration, World Nature, and World Discovery to experience several new attractions, including one of the resort’s most popular, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

The World Showcase also received some love in this massive overhaul as the France pavilion welcomed Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, a clone of an original attraction from the now-named Disney Adventure World park in Disneyland Paris.

This massive project caused EPCOT attendance to soar, making it Walt Disney World’s clear No. 2 park in terms of attendance. According to the 2024 Theme Park Attendance Report (TEA), EPCOT saw a massive jump in attendance the previous year and continues to grow in popularity. Per this report, EPCOT drew 12,133 (in thousands) guests in 2024, which was a 1.3% increase from the previous year. This was not only the largest jump in attendance compared to the other three Walt Disney World parks, but also the two neighboring Universal Orlando Parks, and both parks at the Disneyland Resort (Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure).

EPCOT sat comfortably in third place in overall in domestic park attendance and will likely continue to distance itself from Hollywood Studios (which was in the No. 4 spot). As a result, we have to be even more strategic when navigating the crowds and heat at this park, especially during the grueling Florida summers.

One key point to note before we dig into the hidden corners is that EPCOT typically does not host a festival in the summer. The four-yearly festivals at EPCOT (International Festival of the Arts, International Flower & Garden Festival, International Food and Wine Festival, and International Festival of the Holidays) have become traditions for many visitors and offer an entirely new experience in the park, depending on the time of year you visit.

EPCOT did not host a summer festival in 2025, and this trend is likely to continue in 2026. Once Flower & Garden concludes on June 1, EPCOT will not begin its next festival (Food & Wine) until late August. The 2026 dates for the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival were announced yesterday, with the event beginning on August 27 and running through November 21, 2026.

As a result, from June 2 through nearly the end of August, the park will look quite different from what it does during most months of the season. With no festival activities available this summer, we will have to dig a bit deeper to complete our cheat sheet and avoid the crowds.

The Living Seas Pavilion

As noted in our introduction, the Living Seas pavilion is one of the few “original” EPCOT Center pavilions that remain mostly intact compared to how it was when it first opened. The Living Sea first welcomed guests in 1986, but transformed into The Seas with Nemo & Friends in 2006. This reimagining modified some of the indoor areas, but the most notable label change was the addition of a slow-moving dark ride.

However, given that the attraction is nearly 20 years old, the entire pavilion is becoming overlooked by the general audience. Additionally, with the opening ofย Journey of Water, Inspired by Moanaย and the nearby Land pavilion, which is home toย Soarin’ย andย Living with the Land, both of which are far more popular attractions than The Seas.

Even though it is becoming overlooked, the Seas Pavilion has several corners that are often void of the corridors and offer the ever-important air-conditioning. Throughout the numerous exhibits, guests can take a time capsule back to the original EPCOT and enjoy a range of educational, yet entertaining experiences.

Guests can come close to manatees and even catch a glimpse of them eating heads of romaine lettuce within their tank. In the main viewing area, guests can admire a variety of fish and may even get lucky and see a live scuba diver cleaning the tank.

In addition to the viewing areas, one of the more unknown activities takes place in this pavilion, and the best part is that it is free. Similar to the festival-themed scavenger hunts in the World Showcase, the Seas Pavilion hosts the “Finding Dory’s Friends” scavenger hunt. This experience is targeted towards younger visitors, but is also a fun activity for a group of guests to take part in.

During the scavenger hunt, guests will search the pavilion for specific types of fish. This activity is a great way to encourage exploration and helps guests find the hidden corners of the pavilion while participating in a fun activity. This is the perfect mid-day “break” activity during the summer, as it can be done entirely indoors, away from the heat.

Theater Experiences in The World Showcase

The remaining sections of this piece will spotlight areas in the World Showcase. Given the wide pathways and limited shade near the lagoon, the World Showcase can be daunting during summer afternoons.

However, there are several ways to get indoors and still appreciate the country you are “visiting” on your trip around the world. The first aspect of the World Showcase that the average guest often overlooks is the theater experiences.

While most of these are a “one and done” for most guests and not on your must-do list, they are the perfect way to take a break, especially after grabbing a few snacks and drinks around the world. EPCOT offers a theater experience in the Canada, France, United States, and China pavilions.

In Canada, guests can watch Canada Far & Wide, which takes place in a 360-degree theater. This show replaced the original “O Canada” production in 2020, during the park’s massive overhaul.

In this new edition, guests can enjoy an updated production featuring a new score, new scenes, and narration by Eugene Levy and the late Catherine O’Hara.

This film was shot in Circle-Vision 360, as was the original show in this space. This type of filmmaking has deep roots within the Walt Disney Company, as it was developed by Ub Iwerks and debuted in Disneyland Park as Circarama.

This type of filming is also used in the China pavilion’s production, Reflections of China. As in the Canadian film, guests are transported to several iconic locations in China from a unique vantage point.

However, one note to keep in mind: both shows feature a “standing room only” experience and do not have a standard theater, as the other experiences in the World Showcase do.

The next theater experience we will spotlight is in France. However, unlike the first two, this theater operates in a rotating capacity as the Beauty and the Beast Sing Along takes place for most of the morning and afternoons, while Impressions de France plays in the evening (typically after 7:00 PM EST). While the sing-along is geared to younger guests, Impressions de France transports guests to the EPCOT of yesterday.

This 18-minute film takes guests through iconic locations in France, including the palace of Versailles and even the countryside. However, unlike the two shows we discussed in China and Canada, this theater offers traditional seating, which provides guests with the perfect way to conclude their day in EPCOT with a relaxing short film.

The fourth and final theater experience takes place in the United States. An opening-day attraction at EPCOT, The American Adventure is an audio-animatronic spectacle that is a love letter to Walt Disney’s passion for American history and his home country. This show takes guests through moments in American history from the voyage of the Mayflower, the writing of the Declaration of Independence, and the start of the Civil War. Animatronics of Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain narrate this entire experience. Like in France, this 28-minute show features regular seating and runs continuously throughout the day, offering guests a perfect midday break once the heat begins to pick up.

The Hidden Corners in The World Showcase

Outside the theater experiences, nearly every country within the World Showcase features exhibits or a walkthrough that many guests overlook, offering the perfect balance of entertainment and a crowd break, similar to the Seas.

While my go-to experience to enjoy the hidden corners of the World Showcase would be to participate in the festival-themed scavenger hunts (like Spike’s Pollen-Nation Exploration Scavenger Hunt), even during non-festival times, there are several ways to enjoy the nooks and crannies of the World Showcase while avoiding the crowds.

After (or before) the American Adventure, guests can admire The Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chiefโ€™s Tribute to Americaโ€™s Warriors, a series of paintings by former President George W. Bush. These paintings show respect for the men and women who served in the Armed Forces.

On the right side of the lobby, visitors can find the American Heritage Gallery, which currently hosts the Creating Tradition: Innovation and Change in American Indian Art” exhibit. Guests often miss this exhibit since it is in the waiting area of The American Adventure.

Over in China, guests can visit the “Inside Shanghai Disneyland Resort” exhibit that features concept art, models, and cast costumes from the Shanghai Disneyland Park. Disney fans interested in visiting or learning about the overseas parks should definitely stop here on their journey around the world.

In addition to these, guests can take a walk through a “hidden” tranquil garden in the back corner of the Japan pavilion and a relaxing garden and seating area near the back of the United Kingdom pavilion. The World Showcase pavilions that do not house premier attractions often have several hidden corners that are worth exploring and could even become your go-to snack spot.

The International Gateway Resorts

To round out this piece, I also wanted to spotlight the nearby resorts, within walking distance. As we did in our Magic Kingdom edition, EPCOT is located within walking distance of several deluxe resorts that provide guests an alternative way to take a mid-day break.

When exiting through the International Gateway (near the France Pavilion), guests can visit Disney’s Boardwalk (Inn & Villas), Disney’s Beach Club (Resort & Villas), and Disney’s Yacht Club. Additionally, the third-party-hosted Swan and Dolphin Resorts and Swan Reserve are located alongside Crescent Lake. Outside the International Gateway, guests can also take the Skyliner, which can take them to other resorts, including Disney’s Riviera Resort.

At the Beach Club, guests can dine at one of the most popular spots on property, Beaches and Cream. Along the Boardwalk, guests can grab a dink at the AbracadaBAR and find Italian cuisine at Trattoria al Forno.

While guests are looking to spend the entirety of their “park day” at the park, taking a break at these resorts is an effective way to spend their afternoons, as they offer great dining and plenty of indoor seating to cool off.

Conclusion

As discussed, exploration is at the heart of EPCOT. To avoid the heat and crowds during a Florida summer, guests should take the unbeaten path and explore often-overlooked areas like The Seas Pavilion and the hidden corners of the World Showcase. By taking the time to view one of the thater experiences you often walked past, guests can gain a new appreciation of a culture and country during their visit, which is what the park was designed to do.

While the many block-buster attractions at this park like Cosmic Rewind and Frozen Ever After may be at the top of your must-do list, take the time, especially during the busy afternoons to enjoy the overlooked experiences, it will not only give you the opportunity to appreciate a new attraction but also find the much-needed quiet time in one of most busiest theme parks on the planet.
