Maybe this was before even your time.
I WORKED at frontierland operation, ('78-'80) I was the opening lead off and on at Tom Sawyers Island Raft. I was to be there at 7AM every day to drive a rast with someone from Frontieland foods. Every day they delived FRESH THAT DAY Duch Apple Pies to Aunt Polly's.
Whenever I went to the park with relatives, I went out my way to make a special trip to Aunt Polys for a slice of that pie and sit on the deck watching the canoes, keelboats, and Riverboats go by.
I miss that also.

What do I miss the most? All I need to say is just five words: The Main Street Electrical Parade.

I also miss Aunt Pollys, The Tapestry of Nations, and the lack of magic with some cast members. My son is going to be a college intern. He got his last choice custodial. but he has been on cloud nine and can't wait til August 15 when he gets to live at Disney World. He has acted like a cast member for years giving directions to lost looking park goers. Now he gets to do it for real. Maybe he can inspire some of these employee's to become magic bearing cast members.

yes and no.
i'm also a physician and long tome disney fan like you.
yes there has been a change at wdw that seems mostly due to it becoming a giant corporation and not just a well kept amusement park where young people want to go work to make small children smile. They replace funny, entertaining shows like mickey's 60th birthday party with "product placement" shows to promote their after-school tv show lineup. I also can't understand why they can"t update the movies at the canadian ,french, and china exhibits at epcot. Has nothing changed in these countries in 30 years?
But on the other hand I think you can see or even assist in some of the magic. The windows in peoples rooms at the all sports hotels many times will be decorated by the famillies with stuffed animals or pictures of the cheerleaders inside the room who are ther for a competition. I will stop and ask people taking pictures of their family if I can take their picture so the whole family can be in the picture together. At the 3-d movies I will reach out to try and "grab" those items that seem to be floating by just to encuorage the 3 or 4 year old beside me to do the same, Or I just look at the kids who are truly enjoying themselves with a disney character which makes me think about the days my kids did the same

I have to agree with the last issue you have with Disney. We have been going to Disney from NY since 1986 and have noticed a definite change in the "magic" from cast members and the corporation in general. It used to be that from the time you called for your reservation to the time you left your hotel for home, the attitudes of the cast members were upbeat and friendly, magical if you were. Now when you call reservations central or have any contact with cast members, they are generally polite but it seems to me that it is just a job and no real efforts are made to make you feel special. Disney is the one and only place in the world that I have high hopes for the magic and maybe too high expectations. That comes only from those earlier experiences of magical cast members. Too bad it has gotten so big that that feeling is only experienced by promotional efforts such as the Year of a Million Dreams.

Our family really misses the Characters on Holiday at Epcot. We have been known to chase that bus halfway around World Showcase. It was a great way to meet some out of the ordinary characters and actually get a photo with Mickey & Minnie together. My 5 year old daughter was heartbroken when we learned it had been phased out.

I totally agree with you about the new employees--they are just that now, employees, and they don't seem to understand that they are there to make each "guest" feel special. I miss that.

I totally agree with the "missing Magic". It seems like after every trip, the Magic gets smaller and smaller.
I don't think they realize that people really miss things like the Sword in the Stone by the carousel. I have a picture of my son infront of it from every visit. I miss the Skyway and hate the fact that the return station has been turned into a parking lot for the "double wides' - or the mowing mama's as we call them.
I hope the magic lives on so my son's children can feel the same as we do once we step foot onto Main Street.
Time for Disney to realize what "Have a Magical Day" really means.

If you really miss the FedEx, "In the future..." there's a singer by the name of Howie Day who would perform that phrase (and use loops to make it spiffy) at the end of one of his songs. I have mp3s (that are approved to share) of both the song+"Beams of Light" as well as JUST "Beams of Light".

It is sad that Aunt Polly's is gone. We would go to the island and have a pickle and a Coke on every trip. It was just our thing to do.
I never did try one of those beaver tails. Probably just as well, as I would be mourning the loss of those as well!
Very nicely written article.

Dr Mike:
Great article, While the details of your story may differ from family to family the sentiment rings true at our house as well.

I also went for the first time in 2000. That was when they started Fast Pass. What I miss the most, is people now knowing about Fast Pass. I went this past Easter and I heard so many conversations with people trying to deal with getting a Fast Pass, that they weren't even enjoying the moment. Trying to get a Fast Pass is now just another line to stand in, which is ridiculous.

I completely agree! I think it is representative of the world in general - most people are not as considerate as they once were. I've seen a real difference since I grew up - and I'm only 27!
You're right about the magic - there are thousands of CM's that treat it like a job - and for them, it is. There are teens who work after school and others who just work weekends. There are still plenty of magical CM's, but just not as many as last year, or the year before that.
It is related to salary and benefits. I am a former CM and my favorite, most respected manager, Ben, had to work the night shift as a manager at Walmart and the day as a manager at WDW to support his family. Those who are truly magical have a hard time making a living there.
I, for one, feel that Disney spirit coursing through my veins. Many days, like today, I am arriving at work, but I hear the blue birds singing and I wish more than anything that I were going to work at *my* park, handing out maps, answering questions, asking little ones on the parade route to name their favorite princesses, hearing the giggles and squeals from a ride in the distance, feeling chills when I walk past Walt's shadow. If I could support a family on a Cast Member's salary, even if it is not luxurious, I would be back there in a heartbeat. For CM's who feel that magic, there is nothing like being part of that living, breathing, magical, happiness factory. For CM's who don't feel it, they're just there, like a garbage can or a water fountain, they're still useful and important, just not part of the magic.

Oh Mike you bring back such great memories. I really miss the Tapestry parade and think it was one of Disney's best. I really wish they would bring that one back. Also miss the wonderful Beaver Tails. Never took time to stop at Aunt Polly's and I wish I had.
